Nov. 15 Event: Women Leaders Speak!Nov. 15, 2006--Please join CEDPA, the International Women's Media Foundation, and the Center for Women Policy Studies for a briefing by women on the frontlines of peace and stability efforts in conflict-affected countries.
There are more than 20 armed conflicts in the world today, most within country borders. Women and young people are the most vulnerable groups in a conflict and comprise nearly 80 percent of the world’s 35 million refugees and internally displaced people. They are forced to flee their homes and livelihoods when violence erupts, facing increased risk of physical and sexual assault.
But women also play leading roles in preventing conflict and rebuilding communities. Forum speakers will talk about their work leading a student opposition movement in Nepal, leading health policy efforts to address the crisis in Sudan, building a nascent women’s political movement in the Solomon Islands, and working with the ethnic Somali community in Kenya to bridge ethnic conflict.
