Michigan, North Carolina and DC Leaders Join CEDPA Board

WASHINGTON, DC—The Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), an international non-profit that works to improve the lives of women and girls around the world, elected three new board members at its November board meeting in Washington, DC.

  • Detroit native Cheri Alexander is Executive Director of Global Human Resources for General Motors Corporation, overseeing worldwide operations. She has lived and worked in four countries, on three continents and has been responsible for all General Motors personnel outside of North America, supporting operations in 41 countries. Alexander’s work is highlighted in two books. In collaboration with her union counterpart, she authored the first European-wide Corporate Code of Conduct, based on the Global Sullivan Principles, protecting worker's health and safety and preventing the exploitation of children. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Michigan, and a Master’s in Business Administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
  • Chris Gardiner is President and CEO of Gardiner, Kamya & Associates, a management consulting/CPA firm in Washington, DC. He is a British Chartered Accountant and a member of the American Institute of CPAs. Gardiner serves as Chair of the Mayor’s Advisory Commission on Caribbean Community Affairs and as Chair of the Caribbean-American Political Action Committee. He has received commendations from both the DC Mayor and City Council for his services to the District, and is a former Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Greater Washington Society of CPAs, Howard University Hospital and the Public Benefit Corporation (parent company of DC General Hospital).
  • North Carolina leader Karen McNeil-Miller is President of the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, based in Winston-Salem. The Trust awards approximately $27 million annually to respond to basic human needs in North Carolina, and supports initiatives that help families achieve and maintain a higher level of self-sufficiency in the state. A former special education teacher and independent school head, McNeil-Miller has over twenty years of experience in non-profit leadership. She is a fellow of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine, trustee at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and board member of institutions including the United Way and North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research. McNeil-Miller holds Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in education, and a Doctorate in general leadership.

These leaders will contribute their expertise to advance CEDPA’s work with women, families and communities around the world. CEDPA’s global programs increase educational opportunities for girls, ensure access to lifesaving reproductive health and HIV/AIDS information and services, and strengthen women’s leadership in their nations.

With a growing network of 5,000 alumni and partners in more than 150 countries, CEDPA is building a groundswell of change agents for effective international development.
