International Women’s Summit on HIV/AIDSJune 29, 2007—Thousands of women leaders will gather July 4-7 in Nairobi, Kenya to share strategies and demand urgent action to put women and girls at the center of efforts to fight AIDS. Sponsored by the World YWCA, the International Women's Summit will bring together the world’s leading experts on AIDS to address the unique and devastating impact of AIDS on women. Today, over 17 million women are living with HIV. Despite stepped up efforts, infections among women and girls are increasing in many parts of the world. In sub-Saharan Africa, young women are three times more likely to be HIV-positive than young men. In the United States, AIDS is the leading cause of death for African-American women between the ages of 25 and 34. Attendees at the Summit will include policymakers, activists, and women and men leading community efforts to confront HIV/AIDS worldwide. Confirmed speakers include Dr. Margaret Chan of the World Health Organization, Dr. Peter Piot of UNAIDS, and the Honorable Charity Ngilu, Kenya’s Minister of Health and a CEDPA alumna. A key priority of the Summit is to strengthen skills and knowledge among those working on the frontlines against AIDS.
The hands-on, participatory workshop provides women with tools to improve their personal leadership within efforts to confront HIV and AIDS. It includes strategies for overcoming stigma and external barriers to achieving leadership potential, and examines socio-cultural and gender norms that promote discrimination and restrict women's decision-making roles. A complete schedule of workshops and sessions for the International Women’s Summit is available online.
