African Women Leaders Speak Out About AIDS

Community Activists, Health Professionals and Government Officials
Join in Nairobi to Advance Women’s Leadership and Confront AIDS

Join women working on the frontlines of AIDS throughout Africa at an April 30 reception at the Grand Regency Hotel in Nairobi. The event is co-sponsored by the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA) and the Kenyan Caucus for Women’s Leadership.

You will hear from community activists and government leaders who are fighting the stigma and discrimination, violence, lack of information and poverty that have put women and girls at risk of contracting HIV.

Today, 22.5 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are estimated to be living with HIV—and 61 percent of those living with HIV are women. How can governments ensure that HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care address the unique drivers of the epidemic among women? What are the most effective strategies for slowing the spread of HIV and meeting the needs of people living with HIV and AIDS worldwide?

These women leaders are in Nairobi for a three-week program to exchange best practices and learn cutting-edge technical and programmatic information for more effective HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support. They are participants in a program, Advancing Women’s Leadership and Advocacy for AIDS Action, that has been launched to put women and girls at the center of efforts to halt HIV and fight AIDS.

Funded by the Ford Foundation, the program is led by the Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA). CEDPA is an international non-profit organization working worldwide, with offices in Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, India, Nepal and the United States.
