AIDS Activists, International Organizations to Call on Global Leadership to “Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise”

WHAT:

Luncheon briefing by UNAIDS, U.S. and global AIDS advocates, to urge policymakers, civil society and the private sector to keep their promises to reach universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support. Women leaders from India, Swaziland, and Zambia will discuss how to Lead, Promise, and Deliver as we move forward.

WHEN: Monday, December 1, 2008, Noon - 2 pm

WHERE:

National Press Club, Ballroom, 529 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC

WHO:

Jahnabi Goswami, General Secretary, India Network of People Living with HIV;

Thembi Nkambule, National Coordinator, Network of Women Living with HIV, Swaziland;

Patricia Nalls, Executive Director, The Women’s Collective, Washington, DC;

Elizabeth Mataka, United Nations Secretary’s Special Envoy for AIDS in Africa and;

Senator Timothy E. Wirth, President, UN Foundation and Better World Fund

WHY:  The global AIDS response has brought significant progress towards slowing the spread of HIV, but the work is far from over. Today, 33 million people are living with HIV, and in 2007, 2.5 million people were infected and 2.1 million people died of AIDS-related causes. Despite the global economic downturn, now, more than ever global leaders must keep their commitments to make universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support a reality for all.
