Remembering Amel GamalJan. 28, 2009 – CEDPA mourns the loss of Amel Gamal (pictured right), CEDPA/Egypt’s Country Director, long-time colleague, alumna and friend. Amel's enduring grace, compassion and commitment to making the world a better place for adolescent girls in Egypt will always be remembered by all who came in contact with her. Amel joined the CEDPA Egypt office in April 1995, just as the New Horizons project was getting off the ground. The project became her pride and joy. For CEDPA, it would be difficult to imagine New Horizons without the advantage of her knowledge, skills and experience to run the project.
Amel was critical to persuading partners to adopt CEDPA’s participatory approach which was completely revolutionary for rural Egypt at the time. Her diplomatic skills were unmatched, and she always found a solution without confrontation or aggression. She treated everyone with dignity and respect whether it was a young girl in a rural village or the Minister of Education. Amel had a special gift in making people feel welcome and at ease. Her contribution to CEDPA's work and, more importantly, to the lives of thousands of Egyptian girls and boys is incalculable. Since she succumbed to her battle with cancer on December 6, Amel Gamal has left a large hole in our hearts and will be missed greatly. |
