New York Times Sunday Magazine Highlights CEDPAAugust 25, 2009—Last Sunday’s New York Times Magazine highlighted “how educating girls and empowering women can help fight poverty and extremism.” It featured excerpts from “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide,” the new book by Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof and his wife, journalist Sheryl WuDunn. The book, to be released September 8, chronicles human rights violations against women in the developing world and includes a passionate call to arms for transforming their oppression into opportunity. The book recounts stories of individuals doing extraordinary work in the field to transform the lives of women and girls. CEDPA is highlighted as a resource by the Times and on the book’s Web site. Kristof and WuDunn write: “In a large slice of the world, girls are uneducated and women marginalized, and it’s not an accident that those same countries are disproportionately mired in poverty and riven by fundamentalism and chaos...[but] the world is awakening to a powerful truth: Women and girls aren’t the problem; they’re the solution.” That has been CEDPA’s experience for more than 30 years. Our work to advance girls’ education, improve access to lifesaving reproductive health and HIV/AIDS services, and advance women's leadership proves that when women move forward, the world moves with them. You can help us empower more women and girls worldwide by supporting CEDPA’s work. Learn how CEDPA works hand-in-hand with women and girls to improve their lives. |
