Sept. 15, 2009 – Tune in Online to view the Webcast of the Sept. 10 panel discussion on the book "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide” hosted by the Woodrow Wilson Center.

The authors of the recently released book, Kristof and WuDunn, provide readers with first person accounts giving evidence that empowering women and improving their standing in their communities can be the solutions to many of the problems in development, including poverty.

The book’s authors were joined on the panel by experts in the field of reproductive health including CEDPA/India Country Director, Aparajita Gogoi. Aparajita provided the audience with real life examples from her work with the White Ribbon Alliance in India that upheld the argument made in the book.

“We know what can prevent women and children from dying needlessly,” explained Aparajita. “What we are not doing is actually implementing those solutions.”

CEDPA/India helped form the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood India (WRAI) in 1999 to bring critical attention and action to the need to make motherhood safer.
