Tucson, Chicago and Minneapolis Leaders Join CEDPA

International Organization Advances Lives of Women and Girls Worldwide

WASHINGTON, DC—The Centre for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), an international non-profit that works to improve the lives of women and girls around the world, elected a new board chairman and announced new members at its November board meeting in Washington, D.C.

Tucson resident John M. Smith, M.D. was appointed Chairman after serving on the CEDPA Board of Directors since 1997. Dr. Smith, a retired physician in obstetrics and gynecology, is the author of Women and Doctors: A Physician’s Explosive Account of Women’s Medical Treatment, and Mistreatment, in America Today (1992). A former ob-gyn physician who practiced in Colorado Springs, Dr. Smith also co-founded Peak Health Care, Inc., a multi-state publicly traded HMO company. He has served on several boards, including as president of the Colorado Springs Symphony Board.

The CEDPA Board of Directors also announced the appointments of new board members from Chicago, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C.

Chicago attorney Susan M. Benton is partner at Winston & Strawn LLP, the nation’s oldest and largest national law firm. The firm’s clients range from multinational corporations to small organizations in various industries, including General Electric Company, American Airlines, Barr Laboratories and Bank One. Her focus includes labor relations and employment litigation. Ms. Benton is a fellow of the College of Labor & Employment Lawyers and the American Bar Association, and is the Chairperson for the Winston and Strawn Foundation (Chicago).

Minneapolis consultant Joan Migliori is a member of the Information Industry Initiative of the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. She also is a fellow at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Her extensive business experience includes management at Moore Business Forms, a joint venture with IBM, and as a marketing executive to the health care industry. She has served as a technology and marketing advisor to non-profit organizations including the Girl Scouts and the YWCA.

Carol A. Peasley, a resident of Washington, D.C., is recently retired from the U.S. Agency for International Development as Counselor to the agency. Her long career includes leadership as USAID mission director in Malawi, senior deputy assistant administrator to the Africa Bureau, and mission director in Russia. Ms. Peasley achieved the highest rank of the U.S. foreign service as Career Minister in USAID, and was awarded USAID’s Distinguished Career Award in 2004.

These leaders will contribute their expertise to advance CEDPA’s work with women, families and communities around the world. CEDPA’s global programs increase educational opportunities for girls, ensure access to lifesaving reproductive health and HIV/AIDS information and services, and strengthen women’s leadership in their nations. With a growing network of 5,000 alumni and partners in almost 150 countries, CEDPA is building a groundswell of change agents for effective international development.
