CEDPA Alumna Wins UN AwardApril 14, 2006—CEDPA alumna Dr. Halida Hanum Akhter won the 2006 United Nations Population Award April 13 for her influential family planning work in Bangladesh. Dr. Akhter serves as the Director-General of the Family Planning Association of Bangladesh. Founded in 1953, the association is one of the oldest Planned Parenthood members.She also chairs the Board of Directors of the Program for Appropriate Technology of Health. In 1986, she founded the Bangladesh Institute of Research for Promotion of Essential and Reproductive Health and Technologies. Dr. Akhter was part of CEDPA’s delegation to the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo and the Beijing Women’s Conference in 1995. CEDPA hosted the largest delegation to the Cairo conference to raise women’s voices within the United Nations’ policy forum. The United Nations Population Award Committee will present Dr. Ahkter with a gold medal and monetary prize at a June 7 ceremony at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The United Nations Population Award honors individuals and organizations each year for their work in population and in improving the health and welfare of individuals.
