Strengthening Egyptian MediaMarch 3, 2006—Journalists from Egyptian radio, TV and print media joined CEDPA/Egypt and the National Council for Women for a March 2 workshop in Maadi. The workshop covered pressing issues, including female illiteracy, reproductive health challenges, female genital mutilation and women’s leadership in parliament. The journalists discussed ways to bring more attention in the media to issues affecting women and girls in Egypt. Inas Gohar, head of the Egyptian Radio Union, urged the participants to develop an advanced three-month editorial calendar so that the media can develop news articles, radio and TV shows to promote these issues. This workshop was part of the “Empowering Grassroots Egyptian Women through Advocacy Networks” program. Funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Middle East Partnership Initiative, the program helps Egyptian networks develop strategies and spur action to advance women’s priorities.
