Successful Global Health OutcomesMay 26, 2006—CEDPA joined other international organizations at the International Conference on Global Health May 31 – June 2. Held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC, this year's conference focused on "Excellence, Innovation and Influence: Pathways to Results." CEDPA’s Aparajita Gogoi, Senior Advisor, Advocacy and Communication and National Coordinator of the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood/India, discussed how to advocate successfully for policy changes at the national level. She was part of a June 2 panel session on effective strategies for maternal health policy. Every five minutes a woman somewhere in India dies due to pregnancy-related complications. Despite efforts, maternal mortality remains high at 540 per 100,000 live births. With 65 percent of deliveries and most maternal deaths occurring at home, one of the immediate recourses is to provide every pregnant woman access to skilled care at birth. The White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI) successfully advocates for policy changes that increase access to an effective referral system and emergency obstetric care. Read more about the WRAI's recent advocacy efforts, including developing guidelines for skilled birth attendants and operating a primary health center for delivery and newborn care.
