Expanding Voluntary Use of Contraception in the Central Terai Region of Nepal Report
Expanding the Voluntary Use of Contraception in the Central Terai Family Future Project was designed to increase the use of voluntary family planning for married women of reproductive age from poor and marginalized communities in the Central Terai. Funded by USAID in partnership with World Learning, the program was implemented in three districts, Bara, Rautahat and Sarlahi, where more than 90 percent of the project population was from marginalized communities. The project selected and trained young educated men and women, aged 15-24, as peer health educators to lead discussions with their peers on family planning, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. The peer health educators would also engage their clients in household and community mobilization activities. Using CEDPA’s Choose a Future! manual, peer health educators led discussion sessions related to puberty, sexual and reproductive health, family planning and goal setting. Over the course of the project, they made household visits informing women and men about modern family planning and reproductive health and related topics. CEDPA staff also trained adult volunteers, family future supporters, aged 25-35, to provide commodities at the doorstep, counsel men and women on contraceptive methods, and explain how to access family planning for couples interested in contraception. Family future supporters referred women to family planning services and distributed condoms to clients in factories and market places. This report provides a detailed explanation of the project and its results.
