Ann Van Dusen, Member, CEDPA Board of DirectorsChair
Ann Van Dusen, Ph.D. is currently Senior Associate at Arabella Advisors, and has consulted with corporate and non-profit clients on strategic planning and monitoring and evaluation, and is working with a number of charitable organizations including the Washington Area Women’s Foundation and the Catalogue for Philanthropy. She has extensive public and private sector experience leading organizations and organizational units, including at the U.S. Agency for International Development where she received the Meritorious Presidential Rank Award in 2001. She held Senior Executive positions as well with Save the Children, and Enterprise Works (formerly Appropriate Technology International). Dr. Van Dusen is an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University and has published on social indicators, health and poverty, women and family in the Arab world and, most recently, on foreign aid reform. She has a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins in Sociology and Social Anthropology, an M.A. from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and a B.A. with honors from Wellesley College.

Kaval Gulhati, Chair Emeritus, CEDPA Board of Directors Chair Emeritus
Kaval Gulhati is a senior population and development specialist with more than 30 years of experience in health and demography, institutional development, training, project management, program design and implementation in Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. Born and educated in India, her career has spanned work internationally in the field of development. She has developed training programs aimed at empowering women through skills, information and capacity building. She has expertise in organizational development, having successfully co-founded and served as President and CEO of the Center for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA) in Washington, D.C. During her tenure, the organization established a reputation for professionalism, integrity and development with caring. She is the co-author of two recent books on the voluntary sector in India. Other publications include articles on population, management and women in development. She also serves as Board Member to several nongovernmental organizations. Her current work is focused on the management of the Unniti Foundation. Her mission is to promote individual, secular philanthropy for development in India.

Doris Mason Martin, CEDPA Board of Directors Vice President
Doris Mason Martin has over twenty-five years of experience in international economic development and law. She is currently the General Counsel for the African Development Foundation, a government-funded agency that provides financial support to African non-governmental organizations that enhance the participation of the poor in the economic and social development of their countries. Ms. Martin has worked as an independent attorney/consultant, providing legal and strategic advice to a variety of international and domestic organizations, including the United Nations Development Program/Ministry of Justice for the State of Eritrea, World Bank, Georgia State University, the National Council for Negro Women, the National Summit on Africa, the Ford Foundation, and several private corporations. In addition, Ms. Martin was a senior advisor to the Africa Bureau in the Agency for International Development and senior vice president of the Mitchell Group management consulting firm. She is published in the area of gender and law. Ms. Martin holds a M.A. in Economics from The American University and a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center. She received her B.A. degree from Clark College in Georgia.

Barie Carmichael, Secretary, CEDPA Board of Directors Secretary
Barie Carmichael is senior counselor at APCO Worldwide, with more than 25 years of experience in corporate communication. Ms. Carmichael has managed strategic communication in a variety of industries involving regulator issues, corporate branding, media relations, litigation, employee/member communication and restructuring. She served for 12 years with Dow Corning Corporation as their vice president and chief communications officer. During this time, she helped guide the company through the breast implant crisis, including devising a turn-around strategy that obtained positive, sustained, page-one coverage in The New York Times, numerous favorable Wall Street Journal editorials, supportive editorials in all major national and regional newspapers, and supportive features on 60 Minutes, the BBC, and Frontline (PBS). Ms. Carmichael has also held the position of partner at The Brunswick Group and served as VISA USA’s executive vice president of corporate relations. She has been recently appointed a Batten Fellow at The University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate Business School and is a member of the Arthur W. Page Society. Ms. Carmichael received her undergraduate degree from Carleton College and her master’s degree from the University of Minnesota.

Kathy Adams BaczkoKathy Adams Baczko is the former Director of Global Partnerships at WASH Advocacy Initiative, a non-profit dedicated to raising awareness of and investments in the global challenge of access to safe water, basic sanitation and hygiene. Prior to relocating to Washington, D.C. in 2010, Ms. Baczko was with the William J. Clinton Foundation as NYC City Director for the Clinton Climate Initiative, addressing the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through real projects and replicable models. Prior to that role, she was Director of Water/Sanitation with particular experience in Rwanda with the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative. She has been involved as an advocate and fund raiser for over a decade with Save the Children and was instrumental in establishing its national Delegation Leadership Council. Ms. Baczko has a long standing record of community and political activism centered on education, women's empowerment and global development. She remains active with Emily’s List and the Women’s Leadership Forum of the DNC. Ms. Baczko received a B.S. degree in Languages and Linguistics from Georgetown University where she recently served as President of the Georgetown University Alumni Association.

Dr. Aparajita GogoiDr. Aparajita Gogoi is the Executive Director of the Center for Development and Population Activities (CEDPA), India. Dr Gogoi is also the national coordinator of the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, India. Dr. Gogoi has over 15 years of extensive experience in program management, with expertise in designing and implementing programs, advocacy campaigns, and defining approaches and strategies for policy issues in population, especially safe motherhood. She has worked with civil society representatives, media and elected representative in sensitizing them on the issue of Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) in India. She has also been involved in safe motherhood advocacy in Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Philippines. She holds a PhD in International Politics from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, and a postgraduate diploma in Journalism.

Paul IsenmanPaul Isenman is a seasoned expert on development policy and aid effectiveness. He is now a consultant on aid effectiveness for the World Bank and other international organizations, specializing in aid architecture, health and education, global programs, and fragile states. Mr. Isenman most recently directed the division responsible for aid effectiveness in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Paris, and led strategy, policy, and grant-making efforts at the United Nations Foundation before then. Mr. Isenman’s extensive programmatic experience was garnered from 22 years with World Bank wherein he was director dealing with countries in Africa, South Asia and Latin America and also held several senior level policy and economic posts throughout his years with World Bank. Mr. Isenman has a BA and MBA from Harvard University and has published in the areas of human development, aid allocations, food aid, and purchasing power parities. Mr. Isenman lives in France and is fluent in French.

Rita Khanna, Ph.D. is President of International Technology Transfer Management, Inc. and Legal Counsel for Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation. In these capacities she is involved in issues relating to Global Health with a focus on developing country diseases and technology transfer in the field of biotechnology. Prior to this Dr. Khanna was Director of Technology Transfer at the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute. Dr. Khanna has also worked at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Office of Technology Transfer, the Office of the General Counsel and National Cancer Institute’s (NCI’s) Technology Development and Commercialization Branch. In addition to her technology transfer and legal experience, she has extensive research experience in both academia and private industry, including at NIH, Smithsonian Radiation Biology Laboratory, a Maryland biotech company, Max-Volmer Institute and University of Illinois. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and her J.D. from the University of Maryland. Dr. Khanna has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals. She has received many professional awards, and has been an invited speaker at many national and international conferences. She is a Board Member of the Public Interest Intellectual Property Associates, Advisor to the World Bank’s Development Gateway, Program Committee Member of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM), Scientific Advisor to the Institute for One World Health, Board Member for Kuchipudi Kalanidhi Dance Academy, and was a Committee Member of the NCI’s Decision Network Committee and Co-Chair of the first Gordon Conference on technology transfer titled "Global Aspects of Technology Transfer: Biotechnology."

Nancy LeaMondNancy LeaMond is the Executive Vice President of AARP’s State and National Group, leads government affairs, public education and integrated legislative and educational campaigns for AARP's social change agenda. During her time at AARP, Nancy has led two of the Association’s major campaigns, including Health Action Now - AARP’s effort to ensure that federal health reform included important benefits for Americans 50+, and Divided We Fail - the association's national initiative with to put health care and financial security at the top of the country’s agenda. Ms. LeaMond is a member of the AARP Executive Leadership Team. She began her tenure at AARP in 2001 as Director of International Affairs. During the Clinton Administration, Ms. LeaMond served as the Chief of Staff and Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Congressional Affairs at the Office of the United States Trade Representative. Ms. LeaMond worked extensively on health care and pension issues before entering the trade field, beginning her career in the Public Health Service, the Medicaid program and the Department of Commerce. She served in the Office of Management and Budget, the Department of Education and later on Capitol Hill as chief of staff to a senior Member of Congress in the Democratic leadership. In addition, for five years Ms. LeaMond was president of the Congressional Economic Leadership Institute, a non-profit, non-partisan forum for education and dialogue with members of Congress on economic competitiveness and trade issues. Ms. LeaMond holds a bachelors degree from Smith College and a master’s degree in public policy and urban planning from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She is a former trustee of Smith College and serves on the Board of the International Women’s Forum of Washington, D.C. She is a member of the Dean’s Advisory Leadership Council at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, the Academy of Nursing’s Raise the Voice Advisory Council, and the KB Home National Advisory Board on home and community development.

Zuraidah MianZuraidah Mian is currently the Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at Khazanah Nasional, the investment holding arm of the government of Malaysia and is empowered as the government’s strategic investor in new industries and markets. Prior to Khazanah Nasional, Ms. Mian was an instructor at the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI), which addresses major gaps in international peace operations support. Ms. Mian also served as Program Manager at International Planned Parenthood Federation ESEAOR as well as the Planning and Development Head at MERCY Malaysia, focusing on providing medical relief, sustainable health related development and risk reduction activities for vulnerable communities in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Ms. Mian is an alumna of CEDPA’s Global Women in Management workshop (GWIM 40), and has completed her Coaching Certification through COACH 1 and has completed numerous training and management programs. Ms Mian holds a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.

Karen McNeil-Miller is President of the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust and has over twenty years experience in not-for-profit institutions with over fifteen years of that in leadership roles. She is recognized as a committed and passionate leader and as a competent and focused manager and has proven skills of interpreting and operationalizing a non-profit mission. Ms. Miller is an accomplished public speaker, institutional spokesperson, professional advocate, and facilitator and has a strong track record of leadership strategy design and external constituent relationships. Ms. Miller has a BA in Early Childhood Education and a MA in Cross-Categorical Special Education from University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an Ed.D. in General Administrative Leadership from Vanderbilt University.

John PielemeierJohn Pielemeier has spent most of his career as an interdisciplinary international development specialist designing, evaluating and managing international development programs. A former Peace Corps Volunteer, Mr. Pielemeier served with USAID during a 22 year career with overseas assignments in Brazil, Southern Africa (Botswana) and Liberia. He has served as USAID mission director in Brazil, USAID/W office director for South Asia and as a special assistant in the office of the USAID Administrator. After his early retirement from USAID, Mr. Pielemeier has been a senior fellow at WWF, director of the TAACS program at CEDPA, a professional trainer and a coach. As an independent consultant he has worked for USAID, the Global Environmental Facility, the United Nations and a variety of PVOs. He has served as team leader for over fifteen program and project design and evaluation teams in all regions of the world. In 1994, Mr. Pielemeier was asked to re-structure the one-week TAACS/Fellows training program, “Essential Training for PHN and Education Technical Advisors” (or “How to Survive in USAID”). He continued to direct and help teach this highly-evaluated course for 11 years, building a cohort of excellent USAID officer trainers in the process. Mr. Pielemeier has also provided training for the AAAS fellows program and is a coach for new USAID health and program officers (NEPs, IDIs and DLis). Mr. Pielemeier is married and has two adult children. His hobbies include golf, the Washington Nationals and family history and he volunteers with Washington-based non-profit organizations.

Julia PistorJulia Pistor started producing films in 1995 when she joined Nickelodeon Movies as Associate Producer of HARRIET THE SPY. During her 11-year tenure, she helped build a number of lucrative television and film franchises and successfully extended the Nickelodeon brand into a leading provider of kid and family movies. At Nickelodeon Movies she oversaw the development, production, and release of an impressive slate of live-action and animation features released through Paramount Pictures. A sample of the films Ms. Pistor produced while there include the 2006 hit NACHO LIBRE, starring Jack Black, the animated SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE, the RUGRATS franchise, Academy Award nominated JIMMY NEUTRON, as well as the live-action CHARLOTTE’S WEB, LEMONY SNICKET’S SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, and THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES. Most recently, Ms. Pistor founded an independent production and consulting company that creates and advises on all forms of content across all platforms (TV, features, interactive, etc.). In November 2010 the company produced the CGI animated, FIREBREATHER, Cartoon Network’s highest rated original TV movie. Ms. Pistor is also consulting for HiT Entertainment; taking their pre-school properties such as THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE and BOB THE BUILDER, aging them up and producing them into theatrical live action/CGI movies for the entire family to enjoy. In addition, Ms. Pistor is currently producing several projects including THE BABY PEAS, Will.i.am’s (The Black Eyed Peas) transmedia CGI series, sequels to FIREBREATHER for Cartoon Network, MEDIATOR, based on the New York Times best-selling series of novels by Meg Cabot, feature thriller THE ADORATION OF JENNA FOX with director Brad Silberling attached at Fox 2000, family movie MAGICIAN’S ELEPHANT, Newbery Award winning author Kate DiCamillo’s new book, and the family adventure film TIME SHARE at Walden Media.

Kathleen Rowan heads Kathleen Z. Rowan Consulting as a Non-profit organization specialist. Previously, Ms. Rowan was CFO at Relief International - (EnterpriseWorks/VITA). Ms. Rowan has had extensive hands-on experience in financial management of non-profit organizations and is a CPA/MPA (public administration) with diverse experience in the non-profit world. Prior to Enterprise Works/VITA, she was with Resources Global, a public, project-based professional services firm. While with Resources Global, Ms. Rowan worked on projects for In2Books, Inc., the American Architectural Foundation, and the Middle East Institute. Ms. Rowan received her B.S. and B.A. from the University of Florida and holds a M.A. from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

Saloni SinhaSaloni Sinha is currently the CEO of Shelter First, a triple-bottom line company that creates sustainable housing in rural and semi-rural areas of India. In her career spanning more than 15 years, Saloni has served in senior leadership positions of highly innovative companies. Most recently she was the Treasurer of one of the largest global gift-ware companies. Her experience includes leading finance and operations in venture-backed companies in the Silicon Valley. She started her career with KPMG in India. She is a graduate of Delhi University, India, a CPA and Chartered Accountant.

John M. Smith, M.D.John M. Smith, M.D. is the author of Women and Doctors: A Physician’s Explosive Account of Women’s Medical Treatment, and Mistreatment, in America Today. After completing his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1969, Dr. Smith served as a Major in the U.S. Air Force. In 1974, he started his private practice in OB/GYN at the Colorado Springs Medical Center where he served as the Director of its Ambulatory Surgery Unit from 1980 to 1984. Dr. Smith co‐founded Peak Health Care, Inc., a multi‐state publicly traded HMO company. He has served as President of the Colorado Springs Symphony board, chairman of the CSSO Foundation board, co-founder of the Center for Entrepreneurship at UCCS, and the Colorado Springs Leadership Institute. He has served as a board member for a variety of other organizations including the Alten Water Treatment Corporation, the UCCS Gallery of Contemporary Art, The Palmer Foundation, and Social Venture Partners, Greater Tucson, of which he is currently the board chair. He first became a CEDPA board member in 1998. He now resides in Tucson, Arizona, with his wife, Jane Ragle, and has retired from active clinical practice.

Susan Tarrence a New Jersey native, has made a career in advertising sales for The New York Times as a Group Director and the Tribune Company in Chicago where she was the VP of Sales. In 2004, she started her own consulting firm, The Sales Development Company of which she is the President and CEO. The firm offers solutions that increase sales department revenues and improve sales department efficiencies and has offices in the NY Area, Chicago and Tucson. For the last four years, she has been working with one client, a mobile marketing startup, called Xipto. Since 2004, she has been on the board of the Primavera Foundation, Tucson’s award-winning poverty and homeless services agency. She is also an active board member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Fine Arts at the University of Arizona. She has just joined the board of a local conservation group, called the Rillito River Project. She is also a budding novelist and photographer, and enjoys cooking and fine dining.

Holly WiseHolly Wise leads a consultancy practice, Wise Solutions LLC, which brings international development, corporate social responsibility, public–private alliance and business development expertise to corporations, foundations and nonprofit organizations. She teaches enterprise development at Georgetown University’s graduate school of foreign service and sits on the board of GlobalGiving, an online auction site for global development organizations. Ms. Wise is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She spent 26 years in the Foreign Service with USAID, achieving the diplomatic rank of Minister Counselor and is the founder and first Secretariat Director of the Global Development Alliance. Ms. Wise also served as USAID chair at the National Defense University where she taught political science, environmental courses and published research on China.
