Dear Friend of CEDPA, Turiza Tandago lives in a country where traditional culture dictates that women may not walk, sit or stand in front of men. In Papua, New Guinea, women are rarely educated and definitely not encouraged to speak publicly. So when Turiza grasped the podium at the ExxonMobil reception for the Global Women in Management workshop (GWIM 54) last month, the room fell silent. When Turiza, the first woman in her village to drive a car or wear trousers, finished her remarks, the room erupted in cheers – both from her 25 GWIM 54 colleagues from around the world and the scores of CEDPA friends at the reception. Turiza so clearly demonstrated that evening why leadership and management training for women can make such a difference.
